Vegan Sommelier, an internet wine retailer based in Virginia, offers limited production wines, both domestic and foreign, made the traditional way that are not processed with any animal products.
Wines, even organic wines, not known to be vegan, that is, not processed with any animal parts or products, may have passed through shrimp shells, milk, eggs, even a sturgeon's bladder on the way to bottling.
With no labeling requirement in this country to indicate what additives were used in processing and with retailers either not knowing or not saying, it is difficult to know what's in your wine. "At Vegan Sommelier," says founder John Kerr, "it's our business to know what's in your wine."
